The kamasutra is believed to be the oldest and most notable set of sexual manual. Sometimes referred to as kama shastra,
the compilation on the art of love making is an extensive work based on the vedas.
Here are some of the interesting facts of Indian kamasutra:
- The compiler of kamasutra is believed to be vatsayan, who has explained the art of love making in the large volumes. One of the portions of the standard work on human sexual behaviour comprises advice on sexual intercourse.
- Vatsyayana's kamasutra consist of 1250 verses, which are distributed in 36 segments. The art of kama is explained in 7 different parts.
- According to historians, the kamasutra has been written between 400 BCE and 200 CE. Most of them agree that the set of writings were collected later on. The present form of kamasutra was compiled in 2nd century CE.
- Kamasutra is a combination of two words, kama and sutra. Kama is one of the three goals of Hindu life, which ascribes to sensual or sexual pleasure, whereas sutra is a thread that holds things together.
- Since yesteryears, Indians have been adhering to three basic principles of life, namely dharma, artha and kama. The first part of these activities is artha, which relates to ensure the survival of the species. The second one is kama, which relates to the transmission of life keeping into consideration the basic rules of behaviour and morality are not violated. The third, Dharma, is about leading a cohesive life of the species.
- Since the early centuries, the ancient Indians understood the fundamental societal needs. They considered sex and survival of the species as the two basic governing instincts for existence of a race. In this scenario, they brought the kamasutra into practice, to enjoy their life with sixty four arts of love making.
- Kamasutra is not just confined to India, but is also being recognised in the western countries too as an exclusive sex manual, explaining virtuous and gracious living related to art of love, family life and pleasure-oriented faculties.
- Besides lovemaking, the manual comprises human faculties such as three aims /priorities of life, knowledge acquisition, conduct of the well-bred townsman and reflections on intermediaries.
- The ancient Indian literary work has been translated in several languages over the years. The most widely known English translation of the kamasutra was printed in 1883 by the renowned orientalist Sir Richard Francis Burton.
