The importance of accurate translation services was recently highlighted by the appearance of Vatican document that appeared to be condoning active birth control. As it turned out, however, it was a case of the Italian translation not accurately reflecting the German original.

As the world’s population is growing today,Vatican- An Urgent Need for Grammar Experts and Qualified Translators Articles many people think that it is probably the right time to reduce the tremendous growth and increasing number of the world population. However, I guess, the Catholic Church will still disallow using artificial contraceptive techniques. Thus, Christian countries will officially disagree with that idea.Recently, the Catholic Church in Italy published a book about birth control. However, there was a language error in the Catholic book that was intended for youths and young couples. The Church decided to pull all the books from the shelves, for it created a big issue and shocked the Italian Catholic society. Italians were quite surprised about the new policy and perception of the Church towards birth control. The Italian translation of YouthCat (Youth Catechism), which had originally been scripted in German and has a foreword from the Pope, was terribly lost in translation, giving the public the impression that it allowed artificial contraception to Catholic couples. However, this was a big deal to Catholic society, for it appears to be a new rule and a change of perception of the Church. Thus, the whole Catholic society in Italy was all suddenly surprised about the serious new decision about birth control. Although natural family planning is allowed to Catholics, still the issue about the mistranslated text about birth control was a big deal. The thing was, the original German text said "Empfängnisregelung", which translated into Italian is , “Metodi anticoncezionali” or "contraceptive methods". The issue arose when a question appeared in the book or catechism that states, "Can a Christian couple turn to contraceptive methods?" and it was answered as ‘’Yes’’.However, it seems that the Vatican was surprised and yet they should be lucky that the Italian translation of the book was based on a German text. Still, it was entirely the fault of the editor and translator, and a subtle mistranslation, and not the supposed change of perception of the Catholic Church about birth control. In addition, the Vatican Church continues to disallow artificial birth control and strongly affirms that contraception is evil.Citta Nouva the editorial group of the said reading materials apologized and withdrew all the materials on the shelves in order to get it properly corrected. Moreover, linguists and translators from around the world agreed that the Vatican should use a good skilled translator and grammar expert every time the Vatican wants to disseminate some information that may not always be clear. In addition, when the Pope was interviewed about who could officially use condoms, he stated that male prostitutes could use it. Though the Pope was talking in his Native German language, it was still clear that male prostitutes only are allowed to use this. This has been argued over by many linguists. Was he referring to gays? I don’t know. Translation alone without editing or proofreading is a big no, no in the process. Even if the translation involved one mistranslated word, the entire meaning of the text will be completely different. Thus, translators should know the importance and complexities of the whole process.
