The Risks of High-Speed Internet Access

High-speed internet access,Are You Aware of Who Might Be Prying Into Your Computer? Articles such as DSL or cable, has revolutionized our work and personal lives. However, it also exposes us to additional risks. With your internet connection potentially open all day, even when you're not actively using it, your system becomes a potential target for hackers.

These cybercriminals frequently scan the internet, looking for systems they can breach. They may not be targeting you personally, but their scans could still identify your system as a potential target. For instance, in the hour before writing this article, my computer experienced three attempted intrusions via my cable connection. Two were hackers probing for vulnerabilities, and the third was checking for a specific Trojan program that could compromise my system.

The Importance of Firewall Software

Thankfully, my system is equipped with a firewall software program that detects and blocks these attacks. This program, Black Ice Defender, also logs these attacks, allowing me to review them. While it cost me around $40, the peace of mind it provides is well worth the price. Another highly recommended program is ZoneAlarm, which is free for personal and non-profit use.

Checking Your Computer's Security

I recently came across a site called "Shields UP!" in PC Magazine. This site allows you to check your computer's security for free. The tests are designed for Windows systems and provide a comprehensive report within a few minutes. After running these tests, I was relieved to find that my system was secure.

The Potential Consequences of a Breach

You might think that as an individual user, you're not a likely target for hackers. However, consider the sensitive information stored on your computer, such as credit card numbers, account details, and personal data. You might be surprised by the number of files saved on your machine by Windows and other programs without your knowledge.

In the past year, I've had to change my credit card details twice due to breaches at large, well-known companies. This goes to show that anyone can be a target. With the right software, you can enhance your computer's security, whether it's free or relatively inexpensive. Why not take steps to feel a little more secure?
