Guide to Dundee
Dundee is the 4th largest city in Scotland and it offers a great place to shop and also a vibrant nightlife. It is situated on the east coast of Scotland in the central belt with Fife across the Tay River and Aberdeen and Edinburgh within an hours drive.
The main attraction in Dundee is the R.S.S Discovery which is a ten minute walk from the city centre situated opposite the railway station. There are tours around the ship and you learn about its history and importance during your tour.Other popular attractions in the city are the Mc Manus Galleries,
which offers a cultural look at Dundee and it has free admission. There is also the Sensation Science Centre which is a relatively new attraction. It is midway between the railway station and the city centre and it offers plenty to do for kids or fun loving adults.There is excellent shopping in Dundee with two main indoor shopping centres, the Wellgate and the Overgate. These centres offer a good selection of stores and are located on opposite end of the High Street. Along the High Street there is also a good selection of popular stores such as HMV and Next.There is also a new area of shopping available at the waterfront area called the City Quay, there are a few good restaurants and brand stores such as T.K Maxx in this region. It is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre.The nightlife in Dundee offers a wide selection of both bars and nightclubs to choose from. The main club in Dundee at the moment is Fat Sams which is a short walk from the city centre. There is also Liquid (formerly Mardi Gras) and Underground in the same region, both offer good music and a lively atmosphere at the weekends.The cheapest club is the Mono which is part of Dundee Union, you have to be a student or be with a student to get in but inside you will find cheap drinks and a young fun loving crowd. For the older generation, Déjà vu which is opposite the Wellgate, is the best option.When looking for a bar there are numerous options, in the city centre two bars worth trying out are Lloyds and Tickety Boos which are both just off the main High Street to the south. If you walk a bit further in the opposite direction there is the Dog House which offers live music and a lively atmosphere.Another popular region for bars is the West End, going up Perth Road, here you will find an excellent selection of bars. Ones to take note of are the student favourite Nether Inn which is at the beginning of the road. Langs has a great beer garden which is perfect for a sunny day, further up Drouthy Neebours often has live music at the weekends and attracts a music loving crowd.There are numerous accommodation options available throughout the city, whatever your budget you should find something suitable. If you want a luxury hotel then the Apex and the Hilton are the closest match. Both overlook the River Tay to the south of the city centre and have four star ratings.If you are looking for a lower cost hotel then the newly built Holiday Inn or Travelodge are the best options. Both have rooms for under £50 a night and are only a short walk from the city centre and the main shops and restaurants.If you are on a tighter budget then the best and cheapest option is the Backpackers on the High Street.
