If you are parent of colic infant and need to know more this worrying problem then read this article to discover the best ways to reduce colic in newborns.
Colic Infant Is Troubling but Not Harmful
Colic is a condition when a normal healthy, well-fed and well-cared for baby has bouts of uncontrollable and constant crying. These episodes can last as long as 3 hours and happen 3 or 4 times during a week.
While not harmful, these episodes can exhaust the baby and frustrate, irritate and stress out parents needlessly, especially single ones. By studying and using the tips below, any single parent should be able to find at one or two techniques that help them cope with colic in their infant.
Colic Infant Tip#1 – Check the Essentials. Many times, parents will be surprised how often their cute and cuddly newborn has done the “nasty” in their nappies. All babies are different and some just “go” more often than others or respond differently to various formulas and foods (especially if you breast-feed).
So before you blame it on colic in newborns, check for “surprises” that have gone undetected, environmental causes like too cold or too hot, or just a longing for some love and attention.
Colic Infant Tip#2 – Belly Rubs. Massaging or rubbing in a clockwise motion around your infant’s belly button has been known to work wonders for colic. A firm but gentle touch can break down trapped gas bubbles, loosen slow moving wastes plus calm and reassure a fussy colicky baby.
Colic Infant Tip#3 – Hold Them Up After Feeding. Colic in newborns is believed by many medical professionals to be an issue with their developing digestive systems. So by holding them upright for 30 or so minutes after feeding you are giving their little bodies time to properly digest their formulas and other liquids. This also lessens the problem of infant reflux.
Colic Infant Tip#4 – Check the Formulas. As mentioned before different infants respond to various formulas in different ways. There are seven basic formulas: Cow's Milk, Soy (for milk allergies), Reduced Lactose and Lactose-Free (for milk sugar intolerance), Added Rice Starch (a thick one for infant reflux).
For more severe cases you may try an Elemental (made from casein hydrolysate proteins) and, Amino Acid (for extreme food allergies). If you think that the colic in your newborn is caused by their formula then try one of the others
Colic Infant Tip#5 – Walk away. Yes, I know sounds bad, right? But if you really can’t cope anymore, just place the baby down where they can be secure and safe and walk into the next room for a few minutes. Get a cup of coffee or tea and relax. Colic infants cry, that’s their job. Your job is to handle this problem with calm and reason. Don’t let your emotions ruin your time with your baby.
Now that you have some coping skills, you should be able to handle this problem better and maybe get the baby and yourself to bed early.
