That's not even bringing into consideration things like closing costs and rental agreements that you have to incur when you move into a new place. Plus, people are often in a career transition when they move, which makes the money situation even more unpredictable. Boxes

This is where you can save the most money. Movers often use grocery stores and liquor stores for free boxes when they need to pack up their belongings. This is going to be far cheaper than buying the boxes yourself from a retail outlet. In fact, if you ask nicely, many stores will save boxes for you and simply hand them over for free. This is a fairly common request, so don't feel as if you'll be overstepping your boundaries by asking. 

Packing Materials

Buying bags of Styrofoam packing peanuts isn't going to break the bank, but if you're looking to pinch pennies, there are other options. Any type of paper will do to wrap up your valuables. Newspaper is an especially good packing material, provided you subscribe or can scrounge up some old papers. Start saving those papers instead of throwing them out with the trash. An even cheaper idea may be to use towels and clothing as packing material. This will not only save money, but you'll essentially be killing two birds with one stone.

Movers

You can either bring friends and family into the circle to help you move your belongings or hire a moving company. The former will naturally be the more frugal choice, but it isn't always practical. If your friends are comprised of strapping gentlemen who can handle the business of moving heavy furniture or boxes and they are actually willing to help, then it might make sense to use them. If your circle of friends consists of senior citizens and people who are unlikely to be able to lift more than thirty pounds for a few seconds, then hiring a professional will be a necessity. This doesn't need to cost a fortune, either. Do your research and find out which companies in your area are reputable and affordable.
