A recent survey of several thousand British men found that 10% of them often have, or sometimes have, problems with premature ejaculation (PE).
PE occurs basically when a male experiences orgasm before he wants to and ejaculates with minimal physical stimulation. It is the most common ejaculation problem.
If you’re not sure how long ‘normal’ sex should last, you are not alone. But one study covering five different countries found the average time from the moment of physical penetration to the time of ejaculation was around five-and-a-half minutes. Not that anyone uses a stopwatch! There is no set definition of how long is too long, or not long enough.
Occasional episodes of PE may be common, and are not a cause for concern. However the advice from the NHS is that if you are finding that half of your attempts to have intercourse end this way, then it’s a good idea to seek treatment.
Most men with this experience won’t have already had it, and they will have previously ejaculated normally. This is sometimes referred to as ‘secondary’ premature ejaculation.
Couples therapy can help. It also helps to understand some of the underlying causes of premature ejaculation which can include: stress, depression, anxiety, previous traumatic sexual experiences and some medicines, for example those taken for diabetes.
UK online doctor Dr Matt prescribes Priligy (dapoxetine), containing an ingredient to delay the chemical signals in the brain that trigger ejaculation. It is easy and discreet to take. Most men find they can last longer and it is a medication originally created as an antidepressant, part of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) family.
Priligy needs to be used as an on-demand treatment, around one hour before sexual activity and it lasts for two to four hours. It is easily available by online prescription and effective for men aged 18 to 64.
What does Priligy feel like?
Judging from the feedback we receive from patients, many couples are afraid to talk about this issue. Patients say that with Priligy they feel more mentally in control and they are able to last much longer if required. It is effective for reigniting your sexual relationship even for men who have tried and failed with other techniques such as staying away from pornography, different types of foreplay, breathing, focussing or condoms.
With Dr Matt you will receive a discreet consultation online and advice about possible side effects that can sometimes include feeling sleepy, dizziness. You will also be checked for interactions with other medicines (for example, medication used for heart problems, depression, migraine and schizophrenia amongst others).

A recent study found that only 10% of people are able to demonstrate the correct asthma inhaler technique, although on average 75% of patients say they can use it the correct way. In tests the amount of medication entering the lungs was shown to vary from 33% in the best case to 0% at worst. Other research found that 91% of doctors and other healthcare professionals who teach patients inhaler use, "could not demonstrate all the recognised steps" in taking inhaled medication. Are some foods more effective than HRT for the menopause?
If you have some of the symptoms of the menopause it’s always a good idea to understand the underlying changes in the body and how certain foods can have effects on hormones. Oestrogen and progesterone are hormones that play an important role in a women’s body. It is the fluctuating levels of these hormones that cause the physical and emotional symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats, loss of libido and sometimes anxiety or mood swings.
