Getting to know Skin Moles

The skin moles are actually the lesions that are quite common. You don't have to be afraid that these moles are cancerous. Most moles are benign. Do not think that you already have cancer simply because the shape, color and size of your mole have changed.

You shouldn't panic until you have heard what a doctor has to say. Skin moles can take the form of skin tags or freckles. They could be benign lenities or keratosis in other cases. Though there are different type of moles, mole removal has become so easy these days.

Why do moles exist?

Moles normally spring from cell formation abnormalities on the skin. Moles would not develop if the cells are aligned properly and do not crowd one another. The skin moles are formed even faster when they grow together in a tight cluster. A large concentration of cells in one area, even leads to more moles formed. The formation of skin pigment is the main function of melanoyte cells. Without melanocytes, you will not get your skin color. A certain amount of apprehension is attached to the mole's color.

Do mole colors change or intensify?

Changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy can cause darkening of mole's colors. It might also darken due to excessive exposure to the rays of the sun. Apart from this, you can experience a change in color, whenever there are hormonal variations in the body. For example, when you are in your teens, you can experience this change in the mole color.

Those who have moles when they were born call these lesions as congenital moles. Congenital moles do not have the capability to fade away over a period of time. These congenital nevi will be present in at least one person per 100 people. The possibility of turning into a cancerous mole is greater with congenital moles rather than moles that are formed after birth. Melanoma or skin cancer can develop in such people. If the mole is having any special features like a melanoma, you have to consult a skin specialist. When it exceeds 7mm, go straight to a doctor.

Dyplastic moles also exist. They are distinctive for their very large size. They are irregular in shape. With such an irregular shape and large dimension, it can be easily differentiated. It is normal for one person to have more than a hundred of these moles all over their body. They actually have a higher chance of getting cancer than those who have the congenital moles.

Any slight change in size, color and shape of the mole should be immediately referred to a doctor.
