Witchcraft has a long an extensive history behind it. Whether you are a Christian or a fan of history you should know that witchcraft is a big part of history and isn’t something to be ignored. Despite the fact that many people haven’t seen a witch, an act of witchcraft, or any witchcraft spell books it hasn’t stopped people from at least thinking about witches and what they can do. Throughout history Witches have always been seen as evil and even in today’s media they are seen as the villains for the most part. So let’s dive into the history of witchcraft and learn about the many witchcraft stories which occurred, have occurred in history.
Witchcraft originated with the human civilization itself. The fear of the unknown and its imagined role in making our day to day life easy or difficult, created witches and what they do. Witches were the mediators between the human beings and the mysterious super powers such as spirits and angels. When a witch succeeded in resolving the apparently mysterious problem of someone, the performance was termed as magic, a process that could not be easily explained away through any logical analysis. Witchcraft, an earth based religion, was practiced in almost all the societies and cultures across the world according to local beliefs and traditions.
The earliest records of the concept and practice of witchcraft can be traced to the early days of humankind when witchcraft was seen as magical a phenomenon that was invoked for magical rites which ensured good luck, protection against diseases, and other reasons.
However, it was not until 1000 AD that the practice of Witchcraft and witches invoked the wrath of priests, Christianity, and members of the society. Witchcraft, seen as a religion of the ancient and traditional pagan religion which worships the feminine, earthly, and masculine aspects of God, was considered as anti-Christian and a heresy.
Witchcraft itself has been plagued with a history of violence, persecution and hatred due to onlookers thinking poorly of it due to conflictions with their religions and such.
The persecution of witchcraft users has been present through history but the most relevant occurrence of this were the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.
The caused chaos to erupt throughout the community and the first convicted witch, Bridget Bishop, was hanged that June. Eighteen others followed Bishop to Salem’s Gallows Hill, while 150 more men, women, and children were accused over the course of several months.
By September 1692, the hysteria had begun to disappear and people started to question the credibility concerning the trials. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted indemnities to their families, bitterness lingered in the community, and the legacy of these witch trials would remain to be talked about for years to come.
It is truly amazing that witchcraft and its infamy has lived on to the present day despite all of the struggles that the people practicing had to go through as a whole. The attempts to stamp out the word witchcraft have been unsuccessful and it is truly amazing that the history of witchcraft has withstood the test of time
