There are more than hundred different varieties of drill bits which can be used for different purposes. Most of these bits can be used in different ways. The bits used for ceramics are different from those used for metals and wood.

Understanding the Different Varieties of Drill Bits

Morse or Twist bit: One of the most commonly and widely used bit includes the twist bit. These bits are specifically designed to be used on different materials including metals,Drill Bits How to Identify the Different Types? Articles wood, plastic and so forth. Nevertheless, these bits are quite inappropriate for precision drilling as it drills at a lower pace.

Auger bits: These bits are ideally used to bore long and thick holes in wood. It can easily cut thick and deep holes on wood and man-made boards. The auger drill bits have a small chisel-like edge near the tip of the bit. The entire bit has a spiral shape which helps in faster drilling process.

Split point bits: Quiet similar to the twist bits, the split point bits are more narrow and sharper. It is used mainly for cutting metals.

Tile bit: The tile bits are used to bore holes on glass and ceramic tiles. These bits have tungsten carbide tips and can be used in power drilling machines.

Bullet pilot point: These drill bits are similar to the spur point bits. It can be used on wood, metals and plastic. It is usually identified with a central point and two spurs.

Spur point bit: Also known as the Brad point bit, the spur point bit is usually used on wood. It is also known as dowel or wood bit. The spur point bits have two spurs which are raised and a central point which helps to cut wood in a quicker pace.

Masonry bit: These strong drill bits are used for drilling holes in concrete or brick. It is quite similar to the twist bit with specially designed cutting tips.

Forstner bit: One of the most aggressive types of drill bits include the Forstner bits which are mainly used on wood. It is mainly used to bore flat and round holes for fixing kitchen cabinetry and other furniture.

Hole saw bits: The Hole saw bits are used to bore large holes in wood, plastic and some other light metals. These bits can be used to bore clean and smooth holes in wood.

Countersink bits: The countersink bits are specifically designed to be used on soft materials such as plastic and timber. It is used to form a recess for the head of the screws.

Flat wood bit: These bits are used to bore large holes in timber. The flat wood bit has a central point and flat steel on both the sides.

Different projects will require different types of bits. The above mentioned bits will give you a precise idea of the various types of bits and its specified uses.
